🌏 Asian Society of Spine Surgery (ASSA) – History & Milestones

📖 Origins & Early Years (2011–2012)

  • 2011 – The Idea 💡

  • The concept of creating a regional society for sports medicine and arthroscopy was first discussed in November 2011 during a tribute to Dr. John Bartlett in Melbourne, Australia.

  • His fellows and colleagues from across ASEAN recognized the need for a dedicated society to foster collaboration, research, and education in the field.

  • 2012 – Inaugural in Indonesia 🇮🇩

  • January 2012 (Jakarta, IHKS Meeting)Dr. Andre Pontoh (Indonesia) and Dr. Enrique “Rich” Pasion (Philippines) organized an informal introductory meeting.

  • Attendees included:

  • ✅ All agreed to invite colleagues from the six main ASEAN countries to formally establish the group later that year.

  • November 2012 (IOA/AOA Meeting, Indonesia)The Inaugural ASSA Meeting was held, where the Founding Officers and Members were elected, and the Constitution & By-laws were ratified.

🏛 Foundation & Growth (2013–2015)

  • 2013 🌐 – First ASSA Board Meeting held; founding members ratified the Constitution and By-Laws.

  • 2014 📚 – ASSA began supporting regional educational courses and training programs.

  • 2015 ✈️ – Partnership discussions with international bodies (AO Spine, APSS) expanded academic exchange.

 

🌍 Regional Engagement (2016–2018)

  • 2016 🎓 – Launch of Spine Fellowship Exchanges, enabling young surgeons to train in partner countries.

  • 2017 🏥

    • ASSA endorsed multicenter research collaborations, improving data sharing across Asia.

    • SEC Registration & ASEAN Representation - ASSA became officially SEC-registered in Manila and opened its first bank account.
      It also achieved full representation from all 10 ASEAN countries:

      • Main countries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam​

      • New members: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar

  • 2018 📊 – Semarang, Indonesia

    • Hosted a landmark ASSA meeting.

    • Introduced standardized research and registry frameworks.

    • Prof. John Bartlett was honored as ASSA’s Godfather.

 

🌟 Expansion & Recognition (2019–2021)

  • 2019 🏅 – ASSA recognized as a key Asian platform for academic exchange; hosted joint symposia in regional meetings.

  • 2020 💻 – Pivoted to virtual education and online webinars during the COVID-19 pandemic, keeping continuous learning alive.

  • 2021 🔗 – Strengthened collaboration with the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association (AOA) and other Asian federations.

 

🚀 Consolidation & Future (2022–Present)

  • 2022 📖 – ASSA emphasized curriculum-based training for residents and fellows.

  • 2023 🧑‍⚕️ – Initiated young surgeon leadership programs to nurture future spine leaders.

  • 2024 🌏 – Expanded its membership base to include over 15 national spine societies across Asia.

  • 2025 🔮 – Continuing its mission to be the premier Asian hub for education, training, and collaborative research in spine surgery.

A thriving regional organization that connects Asian spine surgeons, promotes academic excellence, and builds a united front for spine care advancement across the continent.
